The ROOSTER TAIL idea actually stems back to a product that we designed and prototyped back in 2009, the idea was to create a load carrying system made up of a parallel hinging platform which could be taken down to ground level for loading and access to the vehicle tailgate, then would be lifted upto a safe height for driving.
We've returned to this idea through a custom design request from a customer wanting to mount 2 x E-Motocross bikes on the rear of the vehicle safely and securely.
This version does not need to hinge in a parallel motion so we've gone with 1 x heavy duty arm which hinges on an assembly which can be fitted to 2 inch receivers or bolted onto heavy duty tow plates. Both offer an extremely strong mount but the heavy duty tow plate version is for those requiring more weight handling, tow bar manufacturers sometimes rate this type of tow bar mount with an extra 100kg of nose weight capacity, which is what we are interested in for this application.
The heavy duty arm is motorized with a heavy duty linear actuator which is powered by the tow electrics or a dedicated power feed if you would like to wire it in this way.
There are hardwired controls and a key operated isolator on the arm itself but we also include 2 x wireless controllers which can be used to operate the arm from a more suitable location, especially helpful if you are loading alone.
On the HD MX 2 the design is very similar to our bicycle versions but everything has been "beefed up" to take the additional weight and size of these sorts of bikes, we have designed this with a maximum weight of 160kg in bikes (80kg each). The rack itself only weighs 30kg, this is down to the way we have designed and fabricated the components and the use of Aluminium as the main material throughout.
The top bar of the rack has removable/movable wheel holders for MX bikes, these have an 80mm opening which supports most wheels but we can offer different sizes and also due to it's modular nature you can also set this up with a regular bicycle wheel holders so this is truly a versatile setup. With the arm in it's down position, the front wheel of the bike is placed into the wheel holder and is secured in place by a ratchet system.
With the wheel in place, the arm is lifted into it's up position, as the bike/s are lifted, the rear wheel comes up and sits on the lower boom in the rear wheel holder (which allows upto 120mm wide tyres) and is then secured in place by a ratchet system the same as the front wheel.
The position of the lower boom can be moved up and down on the arm to allow for different length bikes, the left and right side of the lower boom are also separate so the rack can be setup for two different bikes easily.
Marker lighting is located on the two horizontal booms and powered by the tow electrics, there is also an optional numberplate mount for this and if you would like indicators and brake lights too we can integrate these too.
